"Many faithful of the Church misperceive the issue of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) as simply being a problem with the newer liturgical form celebrated by the Catholic Church.

The real disagreement they have with the Church is actually much deeper and wider than that.

In the video, Rev. Deacon Professor Dr Sherman Kuek OFS gives us a very clear synopsis of who the SSPX are, and the historical background against which they exist.

He explains very clearly the why they have been excommunicated again from the Church.

He also advises what our attitude ought to be as faithful Catholics, towards this society and their current state."

Quoting Rev Deacon Sherman:

As faithful Catholics, what should our attitude be towards the SSPX?

  • We can recognise that there is truth in their frustration.
  • We can sympathize with their dismay over issues.
  • We can genuinely share in their intense love for the church's ancient liturgical patrimony, their traditional devotion and the scholastic clarity of St Thomas Aquinas.
  • But our sympathy must end where schism begins.

We cannot sympathize with their chosen solution.
  • They have identified a legitimate problem but their solution is wrong.
  • We cannot claim to defend catholic tradition while simultaneously violating the most ancient tradition of all - obedient submission to the successor or Peter.
  • As St Augustine, the great Doctor of the Church taught: There is never any legitimate justification for breaking the unity of the Catholic Church. The marks of the true church are one, holy, Catholic and apostolic.
  • To abandon communion with the Roman Pontiff is to abandon that visible incarnational unity.
  • The perceived sins or failures of other members of the church, even high-ranking ones, do not grant us permission to establish a parallel hierarchy or usurp apostolic authority.

So our attitude towards the SPX must be
  • That of sorrow, charity, and urgent prayer.
  • It definitely should not be one of arrogant triumphalism.
  • We must pray fervently for their return to the bark of Peter.
  • But at the same time, we must insist on the indispensibility of the sacred magisterium.
  • True reform in the church is always achieved through suffering and obedient fidelity from within as demonstrated by our great saints.  Never by schismatic separation from the outside.

It is a sad time in the history of the church.

We need to pray for the return of these brothers into the fold of Peter.
