Drawing changes the way I see the world...slowly

Capturing beautiful words of wisdom by David Morales, one of my favourite artist

About drawing the ordinary

[The below words captured from his videos on drawing, formatted and very slightly edited on my part.]

With the pace of life today

we go through the day too fast

And because of that, we miss a lot

We often don't see the thing just in front of us

We pass by a thousand things without noticing them

a paper clip, a sock, the shadow under the chair.

But when we stop and draw them,

something happens.

Drawing is like a spot light

It shows us the reflection on the glass

the scratch at the bottom

the way two lines meet

And suddenly we start to really see

things that were invisible becomes visible

not because those things weren't there

we just haven't seen them until we gave them time

Big things ask for attention

small things are just waiting for it

and that is when the real magic of drawing happens

finding something we did not expect to see

We draw something once

and we will never look at it the same way again

Everyday life becomes something deeper and richer

And we become more alive

Finding the small things

changing the way we see

drawing them with care

letting them show us something new

When we draw,

our hands start moving slowly

our breath calms down

and our eyes stop at one thing

Drawing slowly is a method

it is no about how fast we can finish

we draw with not just our eyes

but with our attention, our breath and our emotions

Slowing down is the way to see more clearly

It's a way to better connect with the world around us.

When we draw something

we have no choice but to look closely

And the ordinary objects start to reveal something.

we start to notice the material, proportions, logic of the design.

we also notice how plants have a rhythm when they grow

or how two nail clippers are not the same

Drawing them gives us the chance to really see

to consider the structure and proportions

to give attention to ordinary objects

to contemplate their beauty

Drawing changes the way we see the world

drawing allows us to find beauty in the ordinary

drawing gives us the chance to slow down

to breath, to see, to experience
