Foundations of Faith 2 - A POWERFUL METAPHOR OF GOD'S DIVINE LIFE IN US

NOTES summarised from:
  1. The Study: "Foundations of Faith : A Journey Through the Catechism of the Catholic Church" (Core message Video - Session 1)
  2. Notes from "Overview of Catholic Theology", Rev Fr Michael Chan

St Thomas and other theologians have used a powerful metaphor to shed light on the profound impact of God's divine life filling our souls.   It is the metaphor of iron in fire.

When an iron rod is put into fire,
it starts to change.
It become hot,
it glows,
it changes in colour,
it emits smoke.

The iron is not fire,
but it takes on the properties of fire.

Our human nature is like the iron rod.

Through the sacraments
we are filled with the fire of God's love,
we begin to change and become more God like.

We become more courageous,
generous, patient, merciful.

The divine life of Christ
begins to glow in us,
and we start to love supernaturally,
which means above nature.
We start to love at a much higher level
than we could love on our own.

By sharing in God's divine life,
we start to take on the character of God,
and begin to love more like he does.

"It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me."
St Paul
