Notes summarised from

SACRED TRADITION

Oral tradition, Sacred Tradition, have been received by the apostles from the mouth of Christ himself or from the apostles themselves.  It is guided by the Holy Spirit, but it is not a whispered secret.  It is something public.

ENCOUNTERING SACRED TRADITION IN 3 MAIN WAYS

CCC 78 says, “The Church, in her doctrine, life and worship, perpetuates and transmits to every generation all that she herself is, all that she believes.”

  • Doctrine of the Church - the early professions of faith, the early creeds, the magisterial teachings, the teachings of the popes, the ecumenical church councils...
  • Life of the Church - the various devotions and common practices, life of the saints who bring us in contact with the living tradition of the church.
  • Worship - the Sacraments, the Liturgy, the various prayers and devotions.

Sacred Scripture is the foundational source, but there are also professions of faith, ecumenical councils, particular councils and synods, pontifical documents, ecclesiastical documents, canon law, liturgy, and ecclesiastical writers. These sources are the foundations of our faith. These are part of the treasure entrusted to the Church to help us know God and His revelation better.
