Foundation of Faith 6 - SACRED SCRIPTURE

Notes summarised from

  1. The Study: "Foundations of Faith : A Journey Through the Catechism of the Catholic Church" (Core message Video - session 2)
  2. Notes from "Overview of Catholic Theology", Rev Fr Michael Chan

SACRED SCRIPTURE

The Bible is not an ordinary book
not just a good story
not just a nice collection of spiritual writings.

The Bible is the Word of God,
It is not merely human words
it is God's Word.

It is also called Sacred Scripture.
When we prayerfully read scripture
we have an encounter with God our Father
who lovingly speaks with us.

In Sacred Scripture,
the Church constantly finds her nourishment and strength,
for she welcomes it not as a human word
but as what it really is
the Word of God.
In the sacred books
the Father in heaven comes lovingly
to meet his children
and talks with them
CCC 104

DIVINE INSPIRATION

The Bible is divinely inspired.

The Word of God took on human language
and became scripture
through divine inspiration.

It is much like the incarnation
where God took on human flash
and became man.

 “The words of God,

expressed in the words of men

are in every way like human language,

just as the word of the Eternal Father,

when He took on Himself the flesh of human weakness,

became like men.”

CCC101

GOD IS THE AUTHOR

Divine inspiration means God is the author.
There is not a single part of Scripture that is not authorised by God.
It is the Word of God.

The books of the Old and the New Testaments,
whole and entire with all their parts
 have God as their author.
CCC 105

The Holy Spirit worked though human authors
The Bible is the Word of God
written in the words of men.

God chose certain men

who made full use of their own faculties and powers,

so that though He acted in them and by them,

it was as true authors

 that they consigned to writing

whatever He wanted written,

and no more.”

CCC 106

THE BIBLE IS TRUE, WITHOUT ERROR

Because the Bible is the Word of God
It is true
It is trustworthy
It is written for the sake of our salvation
for us to come to the knowledge of the truth
we can entrust ourselves to the truth it contains

we read the books of Scripture '=
firmly, faithfully, and without error. '
Teach that truth which God,
for the sake of our salvation,
wished to see confided
to the Sacred Scriptures.
CCC 107

THE CANON OF SCRIPTURE

The Bible can be seen s a library, a collection of 73 books
  • 46 books in the Old testament
  • 27 books in the New testament, including the 4 Gospels

The Gospels are the heart

of all the Scriptures

because they are our principal source

for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word,

our Savior Jesus Christ.
