SURPRISES!

Are we ready to let God "order" our lives and say to Him, “Surprise me”?

SURPRISES

We want surprises, but we want good surprises.

We are designed for surprise, surprises make us happy....but only good surprises.

To allow ourselves to be surprised, we have to believe that good surprises are coming.

And that demands trust.

TRUST

We often worry that we’re not living our best life, that we’re missing out, that our life should be more meaningful, more exciting, more fun.

But if we trust that everything that life throws at us is actually what God is serving to us, that He’s catered specifically for us, then we can really dive into the circumstances of our life with gusto.

We do not have to worry that “things aren’t going right” for us, or that the situation we are in is all wrong.

Our Lord understands all the options of our life. He knows what’s available even if we have no idea.  He knows us. He knows what we like, and He also knows what we would like if we gave it a chance.  And He has decided that the situation we are in is just right for us.

So when something shows up in our life that we didn’t choose, trust Him, accept it, try it out, and enjoy it.

IF WE DO NOT TRUST

If we do not trust, we will get trapped in the narrow sliver of our own preferences.

When something unexpected happens, we throw a fit and go all to pieces.

Or, when we get what we want, we cling to that alone, and eventually, life becomes a tedious, monotonous routine.

Either way, if we do not trust the Lord enough to accept what He serves us, we are not going to enjoy our life as much as God intends us to.

HAPPINESS IS FOUND IN SURPRISES

St. John Henry Newman, in his magnificent poem, “The Pillar of the Cloud”, talks about how happiness is precisely found in not knowing and in not choosing what the future has in stored.

He says,

  • “Lead thou me on, keep thou my feet. I do not ask to see the distant scene – one step is enough for me!"
  • “I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on"
  • “I loved to choose and see my path – but now, Lead Thou Me On!”

That is the prayer of trust.

That is the prayer of one who accepts God’s will in circumstances we can’t change.

That is the greatest way to be constantly surprised and delighted in this life.
