Part 5: QUIET (Beautiful reminders from Mitten Strings from God)

I have been wanting to re-share some posts from the days when I was a young mother - gems I had extracted from one of my wow-books*.

I am re-posting the series of 11 parts here, specially for the young mothers around me.  May your journey of motherhood be as beautiful and as enjoyable as the Lord intended it to be for us!

[*Wow-books are those that have shaped my life in some ways, and they occupy a special place in my heart and on my bookshelf, treasured.]

PART 5 - QUIET

When I clear a quiet space for my family, I make time for our souls to grow.

How did our world get so noisy?  Have we grown so accustomed to the incessant background noise of our daily lives that we have forgotten the shape and feel and sound of silence?

But there is intimacy in a whisper, pools of meaning in the empty spaces between our words, sustenance in quiet.

If every waking moment is coloured by sound, we lose touch with our bodies and our inner selves.

We literally can’t hear ourselves think.

I know I need quiet time each day to draw myself together.

And I have come to realize that my children need this kind of time as well.

Time when they can be fully present with themselves.

Time to discern and follow their own rhythm.T

ime in which to create their own music.

In silence, I become attentive.

I see more - The slant of light across the kitchen table, the tentative expression on one son’s early morning face….

I hear more - The breeze outside the window, eggs sizzling in the pan.....

I am fully attuned to these sounds, for they constitute the melody of this day, the music that tells me who we are, what we need, where we’ve been and where we’re headed.

In silence, we allow the world to enter our hearts.

We must embrace quiet ourselves before we can bring it to our children.

When we cultivate a mood of calm repose in our homes, we are scooping out a space for reflection and wonder, for contemplation and reverie.

Let home be the place where our children can find the peace and quiet they need to make sense of the world.

A place too where we can nurture our inner lives without distraction.

The souls speaks softly. And so I guard our quiet times.

Creativity flourishes in these spaces;  grace and peace resides here too.

May our souls find deep joy in stillness and in quiet...

Excerpts from one of my best-loved books "Mitten Strings for God" by Katrina Kenison (ISBN0-446-52531-6).  I have benefitted greatly from Katrina's timeless reflections & I am certain my family did so too, through the changes brought about in me.  And I pray for God's abundant love and blessings to all families!

Do purchase the book, it contains so much more than the excerpts I am sharing here.  https://www.amazon.sg/Mitten-Strings-God-Reflections-Mothers/dp/0446676934
