WE ARE CALLED TO REACH OUT

Sharing notes of key messages from Daily Gospel Reflections by the Most Rev Archbishop of Singapore William Goh

Matthew 18:1–5, 10, 12-14

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me;

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of myd Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

Key messages from the Archbishop's reflection

Greatness does not lie in rank, position or power in the world, but in the fact that
- we are children of God
- we are all equal before Him
- we are loved by Him
- we are to love all whom He loves.

Many are lost
Many do not believe in Jesus.  Many who believe are disillusioned, lost, wounded, fallen into temptations, lost their Catholic identify.  Many are influenced by the secular world, put priority in the values of the world and its pursuits.  Many are unable to accept the Church's teachings on divorce, same sex union and other ethical and moral doctrines.  Many are not able to reconcile their faith with their lifestyle.  Many who are burdened with struggles in life have no one to turn to for spiritual and moral support.  Many have no prayer life and lack a real personal relationship with God.  Many hearts are hardened by the trials and tragedies of life, or by pride and arrogance.....

We are called to reach out
We are called to reach out and to identify with the heart and mercy of God to those who have lost their faith and their way.   We must be ready to accept rejection but do not give up hope to bring the love and message of Christ to the world.
